What happened?

The Northside Youth and Senior Services Center (NSYSSC) officially broke ground on a new 16,000-square-foot Intergenerational Community Center in St. Louis’s historic Ville neighborhood on June 11, 2026.

Why does it matter?

The $5.7 million project replaces an overcrowded facility to expand essential youth development, senior nutrition (Meals on Wheels), digital training, and crisis response capabilities—serving up to five generations under one roof.

How is it funded?

It was jumpstarted by a $305,000 ARPA-funded Neighborhood Transformation Grant from the City of St. Louis Community Development Administration (CDA), with remaining capital raised via the St. Louis Development Corporation (SLDC), federal grants, and private donors.

Community leaders shovel into dirt for official groundbreaking ceremony

The Northside Youth and Senior Services Center officially broke ground for a stronger North St. Louis during a historic ceremony on Thursday, June 11, 2026. After serving the Ville neighborhood for over 50 years, the non-profit organization is expanding beyond its original facility at 4120 Maffitt Ave to construct a state-of-the-art, ARPA-funded Intergenerational Community Center.

Located down the block from its long-time headquarters, the new space fulfills a promise to deepen community roots and expand essential programs for residents of all ages.

Expanding Essential Services in North St. Louis

For decades, the Northside Youth and Senior Services Center has provided crucial resources, including summer and afterschool youth programs, job training, counseling, computer and fitness classes for seniors, and a dedicated transportation fleet featuring electric vehicles. Its vital Meals on Wheels program alone served 738 seniors in 2024.

The new 16,000-square-foot facility will host:

  • Multipurpose Room & Gymnasium for fitness, social events, and sports.
  • Commercial Kitchen to scale nutrition and food distribution programs.
  • Pantry & Basic Needs Distribution Facility to deliver immediate aid.
  • Computer Lab & Collaboration Spaces for job training and digital literacy.
  • Outdoor Activity Areas & Private Meeting Rooms for tailored counseling.

A Crisis Relief Hub and Intergenerational Third Space

The facility reinforces Northside Youth and Senior Services Center’s role as both an emergency hub and an essential “third space”—a safe location outside home and work for gathering, learning, and collaboration.

Following the May 16th tornado, NSYSSC organized emergency responses, distributing nearly 2,000 fresh meals daily to residents who lost electricity, gas, and water.

“I think it serves as a rallying point… The disasters and emergencies that I’ve actually worked at Northside and been through, we needed spaces where groups can come together and be able to organize.”

Leon Threat, Executive Director, NSYSSC

By accommodating up to five generations at once, the new community center eliminates isolation among older adults while providing mentorship opportunities for local youth.

Funding a $5.7 Million Neighborhood Transformation

The project was launched through a $305,000 ARPA-funded Neighborhood Transformation Grant awarded in 2023 by the City of St. Louis Community Development Administration (CDA). This seed funding covered architectural design and site preparation, paving the way for the $5.7 million project supported by the St. Louis Development Corporation (SLDC), federal funding, private donors, Mayor Cara Spencer, and CDA leadership.

About the Community Development Administration (CDA)

Established in 1974, the CDA invests approximately $25 million annually into affordable housing, public services, and community development across St. Louis. Working with HUD, the Planning and Urban Design Agency, and SLDC, the CDA ensures municipal funding priorities remain transparent, competitive, and community-driven.
