Learn about the upcoming reopening of the Edison Brothers building as the Sheraton St. Louis Downtown in 2027, featuring extensive renovation and restoration efforts.

Whenever Greater St. Louis Inc. shares updates on progress and redevelopment in downtown St. Louis, I’m always the first to get excited. Progress in this area benefits everyone.

The Old Edison Brothers Store Warehouse

One building in particular—the old Edison Brothers Store Warehouse—has a fascinating history. It was once a condo and twice served as hotel properties. I’m thrilled to see it being renovated and returning to greatness, especially outside, as the 1904 World’s Fair mural is being restored.

However, I wish more development would happen around the area bordering Highway 64 and the MetroLink Civic Center transit station. This location is a constant reminder of St. Louis’s glorious past and its promising future.

In addition, there was no response when we reached out to Greater St. Louis Inc. to inquire whether the tenants on the top floors will remain during the restoration and renovation. As always, the Narrative Matters will keep you updated and share more details soon.

Redevelopment has begun on an iconic Downtown St. Louis landmark.

Thanks to an $81M investment from Midas Hospitality, the Edison Brothers building will reopen in fall 2027 as the Sheraton St. Louis Downtown, with an updated hotel and public spaces, as well as new street level amenities aimed at energizing Downtown district connections.

An additional $1M gift from the Edison Family Foundation and Newman Foundation will ensure the building’s iconic mural gets a new life too. Visible from the adjacent I-64 and a striking visual streetscape landmark, the historic trompe l’oeil mural depicts aspects of the 1904 World’s Fair. Its restoration begins Aug. 10.

Originally constructed by J.C. Penney between 1928 and 1929, this landmark has a rich retail legacy, including its later use by Edison Brothers Stores. In addition, the building is renowned for its stunning 1983 trompe l’œil mural by artist Richard Haas. Respectfully, making it a must-see piece of St. Louis architectural and artistic history.
