A statewide coalition of over 700 Missourians launched a massive “Show Me GOTV” day of action across St. Louis, St. Charles, Kansas City, Columbia, and Springfield. Grassroots groups aim to knock on 15,000 doors to defeat Amendments 4 and 5 in the upcoming August 4 primary election.

ST. LOUIS — July 18, 2026 — More than 250 residents from St. Louis and St. Charles joined forces today as part of a statewide Show Me GOTV Day of Action. The initiative brought together nearly 700 Missourians in a coordinated push to knock on 15,000 doors before the August 4 primary election.

Organized by a broad grassroots coalition of pro-democracy, labor, and social justice groups, noon rallies and press conferences took place simultaneously in five major hubs:

  • St. Louis
  • St. Charles
  • Kansas City
  • Columbia
  • Springfield

Following the press conferences, volunteers took to the streets for an afternoon of door-to-door canvassing to educate voters on why they are urging a “No” vote on Amendments 4 and 5.

What is Amendment 5? Critics Warn of an “Everything Tax”

Opponents argue that Amendment 5 creates tax loopholes for corporations and the ultra-wealthy while shifting the financial burden onto working-class families through expanded sales taxes.

Under Amendment 5, sales taxes could be increased on everyday essentials, including:

  • Groceries, gas, and diapers
  • Utility bills and rent
  • Healthcare costs, including doctor’s appointments and prescriptions
  • Personal services like car repairs and funeral services

Crucially, Amendment 5 would also grant the state authority to raise certain taxes without a direct vote from the public, removing long-standing taxpayer protections.

“Amendment 5 makes workers like me pay more so the ultra-wealthy can avoid paying what they owe in taxes and wages. For somebody making what I make, cutting the income tax is worth pocket change. For the wealthy and corporations, it is worth a fortune — and I’m the one paying hundreds more at the register to cover it. I can’t afford an Everything Tax.”

Sena Snipes, Amazon STL8 worker & leader with Missouri Workers Power

“They are calling this an income tax cut, but don’t let them fool you. They’re raising sales taxes on us so they can hand the wealthiest people in Missouri, the billionaires, a tax break. I live paycheck to paycheck… I cannot afford to pay any more. We’ve got to vote no on Amendment 5.”

What is Amendment 4? An Attack on Citizens’ Ballot Power

Organizers warn that Amendment 4 directly targets the initiative petition process — a tool Missourians have used for generations to pass citizen-led legislation.

If passed, Amendment 4 would rewrite Missouri’s constitution to raise the threshold for ballot measures, allowing as few as 5% of voters to block legislation approved by the majority of the state.

“To me, the initiative petition process is democracy in action. Politicians are trying to trick Missouri voters into giving up one of the most powerful tools we have. Amendment 4 is a direct attack on our democracy and we will show them that we will not stand for it!”
